Hubby wasn't paying attention and turned ac down past 65' and off auto. I've now thawed the unit so i'm trying to figure out next step. There isn't a fan option on the unit so is it alright to go ahead and turn it back on auto?

  1. If you aren't low on freon, and it's just that he turned it down too low, you don't need a technician.

It has to melt and thaw all the way... you can spray inside the unit with a garden hose to speed this process up.

If you just think it's thawed and you turn it back on before it is, it will just freeze right back up again.

Do consider the possibility that you need freon and if you do, you're going to need a technician.

  2. You don't have enough freon gas in it and that is why it is freezing up.  The repairman will have to refill the freon gas and as long as there aren't any leaks, after that it should work fine.  All a/c units need checked at the beginning of each season to make sure they have enough gas and don't need any repairs.  It is amazing what damage a little hail can do to an outside a/c unit.  At the warehouse where I work, years of hail damage had bent the cooling fins so the units work very hard trying to cool the offices.

  3. you need more time to defrost. there should be a fan only switch on your thermostsat turn to on. make sure the covers are on the unit or the fan wont work...........

  4. you are either low on refridgerant clogged coil dirty filter or combination of all three you should have fan only on your t-stat if you dont when a tech is called have him look at that unless you can charge a unit pull an evap coil and clean it youll have to call a tech

  5. Call for a technician to repair the AC

  6. Call a tech and I will explain my reasoning, when is the last time you fixed a a/c system. I guess you have a leak detector and all the tools to fix the system, right. And if you pocessed the knowledge and had the proper training, with the EPA card, with the thousands of dollars in tools why would you be wasting your time here, you would have the system fixed by now. Advice here is free and half the time wrong and you still have an A/C system that freezes up, because you do not know

  7. Its definitely because of lack of freon.

Have it checked by your local AC technician and make sure that leaks in your AC evaporator and condenser coils be repaired.

There's no way that  your freon can escape the system. Only leakages can caused that.

    Hope it helped.
