Ac on during the day

We have two story house, and we always turn off up stair ac in the morning and turn on in the night, during the day we use down stairs ac. My question is, is that a good idea to turn on and off ac or to keep running all day both the ac.

Not only is it a good idea to turn off that upstairs AC during the day,

but as the air cools in the evening, a window fan upstairs, arranged to pull in cool air, can blow out the hot air that built up during the day, and lower the bill to cool off the upstairs in the evening.

Fan in one room, doors open, windows open on opposite side of the house.

Well when you turn it off in the day, how long does it run at night? If it runs for a long period of time to cool the upstairs then I would say not to turn it off, but to turn it up to a higher setting... That way it won't run for such a long time in the evening, and you can still save a little on your utility bills...

it's better to go off and on.. if you keep it on all day your house is cooler but a way bigger bill from your electric company..

You may want to use a programmable thermostat and set back the temperature upstairs.  If the temp get too high it may take more work and money to get it comfortable at night.

Let your power bill tell you when you get it! When off it saves no doubt!

If you like large electric bills run the a/c all day. Why cool rooms which are not in use?

it depends on how energy efficient your house is ie. insulation ,windows, doors etc. it is much easier for your ac to maintain a temp  than to be constantly recovering from a higher temp. think as if it were your refridgerator, opening and closing the door all the time. I know you have to go in and out that can not be avoided but all the time you are out and ac is off the house is heating up leaving you with a higher "start temp"  when you turn it on, much better to "recover" 2 or 3 degrees all day than to try to recover 20-25 degrees
