  1. Is it hot outside?

This happened to our AC unit, it was sooooo dang hot outside and we called the ac guy and he just put a water sprinkler that we had on it and let cold water run on it for like an hour and it started back up imediatly but we let the water run for a little longer so it would over heat again. Try this, if it doesnt work then call teh ac guy you could just have a bad ac.

  2. It depends on the type of AC unit you have and that may depend on where you live.

I live in Florida and have a heat pump. The heat exchange unit outside exchanges hot air for cooler air and sends that into the house. To make the compressor more efficent, it uses a big fan to move air across the coils.

If you have a similar unit, and the fan is not coming on, then there could be one of several things going on. Check the breaker box by the unit to make sure it's not tripped. Reset it if it is and see if the fan comes on. If you don't have a box there, look on your breaker panel. You may have a large one on the outside of the house, and a smaller one on the inside of the house. Look for tripped breakers. Reset any you find and see if that works.

If none of that works, there may be an inline fuse somewhere that needs replacing. Also check the breaker panel by your air handler inside. If none of that works and your fan never comes on, then the fan has burned out, or seized or there is another problem within the compressor housing itself. There is nothing inside the unit a home owner can check or fix and there is high voltage inside. So it would then be time to call a qualified AC repair person. Hope this helped.
