my ac stop working after my lights went out during a storm. The downstairs air is working fine. The units outside are working but upstairs no air is blowing even when I turn on the heat nothing comes on. What could it be?

  1. Sounds like the upstairs unit (indoor unit) fan motor or relay is out.

Since the outdoor units are running it must be the fan motor.

The indoor evaporator could be froze up.

Do not run unit if both indoor and outdoor units are not running at the same time.

  2. Do not continue to run it, it sounds like the compressor is done for.  I would either have a tech come look at it or get a new one.  It may be salvageable though so look into calling someone.

Browns Heating and Cooling is who I recommend as long as you are in the NJ area, otherwise try a heat and air conditioning repair company since it effects both.

  3. If the condenser for the upstairs is working without the fan it will freeze up. The air handler could have a board that runs the inside fan and it could have been damaged. If the outside unit does not run to check all the breakers first.
