Academica Coimbra edge past Portimonense SC – Portuguese Liga ZON Sagres news
Academica Coimbra beat relegation-battling Portimonense SC 1-0 at the Estadio Cidade de Coimbra through a Silva Laionel goal in the Portuguese Liga ZON Sagres.
The A Briosa went in with a 4-3-3 formation. Miguel Fidalgo, Amaury Bischoff and Modou Sougou started upfront for the hosts while http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Romuald-Peiser-c31686 guarded the net.
The visitors on the other hand went in with a 4-5-1 formation. Helder Castro started as a lone striker while http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hugo-Ventura-c16424 started in goal for Portimonense.
Both teams looked a bit shaky in the early part of the first half but gradually settled down. Managers from either side were desperate to win in order to strengthen their position in the League.
The home side showed some good control over the ball as the pressure had started to tell upon the visitors. Brazilian Melo Diogo threatened to break the visitors defence but it stood firm.
Portimonense on the other hand showed some promise but were not able to create any clear-cut chances. With just a few minutes remaining in the half, Silva became the first player to be booked in the 40th minute. Both goalkeepers remained untested
as the first half ended goalless.
The home team made a tactical switch and replaced Melo Diogo with Silva Laionel. The switch came as a surprise for a few but the manager had other ideas.
The A Briosa pressed a lot harder as they did in the first half and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions. The visitors were pegged back as the hosts continued to apply pressure.
Soon after, the manager proved his critics wrong as Silva earned an important lead for the home side on the 58th minute mark. Portimonense were forced to wake up as they started searching for an equaliser. The home side defence looked completely
in control and was proving hard to break for the visitors.
With just a few minutes remaining on the clock, the visitors committed everyone forward but all their efforts went in vain as the hosts stood firm.
Andre http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pinto-c30032 got a booking in the 89th minute, more as a result of frustration as the hosts registered an important victory on the night.
With this win, Academica find themselves on the 12th spot in the table. Portimonense chances to stay in the League for the next 2011-12 season look bleak as they are 15th in the table and are still five points behind the 14th
placed Vitoria de Setubal. Crucially though, they still have five games in hand.
Academica will take on Sporting CP while Portimonense will host the leaders http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 in their next game on 10 April, 2011.
