Question:

Acceptable OMC Cobra 86 prop shaft run-out???

I have read that .003" is max run-out. BUT where to measure at? I know my prop shaft is bent - but if I measure 1" up from the thrust face for the prop - its at .0015 - if I measure at the end its .150+. There is vibration at low RPM, but smooths out at plane. I realize this requires attention, but there is only a month left of boating. Can I wait to repair over the winter (maybe 5 more Saturdays of fishing) or does it require immediate attention. OR is it OK and not to worry at all? No evidence of seal wear (water in oil).

  1. The lower unit has to be rebuilt and the shaft changed> But running it will cause more damage to the gears & water intrusion> it is also causing the out drive to vibrate which will cause more damage> It's like driving your car with a bent rim but worse> Your call> I wouldn't>

  2. Don't worry about it,  If it smooths out it's not bent enough to cause failure.  The shaft can be straightened by a good machine shop.  Good luck!
