Question:

Access or Excel for this situation?

I am doing a piece of geography coursework and need to process my data, but I can't decide whether to use Access or Excel. Things I need to do:

-categorise my data using different fields (factors)

-calculate sums and averages

Alternatively, is there a way of using them both? i.e. can you import data from one software into another, if so how?

Thank you in advance!!

  1. The best way is to use both.  Access is a relational database (3D) while Excel is often called a flat database (2D).

Access gives you more advanced options to extract data from a set of records than Excel.  For example, you can create a query in Access to extract out all the records where a certain field condition is met. If you wanted to pull all sales for the month of August, regardless of salesperson and total it, then Access is much more adept at this.

But Excel is often more comfortable to use for raw data entry.

So, most advanced applications use Excel as a 'front end' and Access as a 'back end'.

Here is a link that describes how to pull Excel into Access.
