Ok. so heres the basics. I have a wireless router, a laptop that can pick up wireless and a desktop pc connected via ethernet. The desktop is running Windows XP Home SP3 and the laptop is running Windows Vista. I would like to access files on my main pc from the laptop via the wireless. Does anyone know how to set this up???

  1. If your router manages the connections for both computers (wired and wireless) then you should be able to merely open a run dialog (hold the Windows key and press r--the Windows key has a curved four-square box on it).  In the run dialog type "\\[ComputerName]\C$" where you substitute in your desktop's name for [ComputerName].

You will be prompted for a username and password.

  2. You have to share the folders or drives you want to be able to access. For instance, you can go to your "my computer" and right click on the C: drive on the computer you want to share and choose "sharing and security".

There is a warning there that you have to press before it will allow you to share. Then click on "network sharing" again there is another warning.

Then you can type in the share name of that drive or folder. Once its all shared, its best to go into the permissions and only allow certain network users and delete the anonymous access to make it more secure.

  3. I would suggest that you try running the Network Setup Wizard to see if you're able to access your files when you're done.

    Good luck!
