Question:

Accident and insurance claim?

by  |  earlier

This morning I was driving on highway and I think a piece of metal stuck out of the road when another car drove by and it hit my car. The bumber, the rim and the tire were damaged and it will cost $1500 to replace.

1) Should I claim insurance?

2) I asked the police officer at the scene and she said I didn't need to file the accident. I forget to ask why. Should I do it now (for the purpose of making insurance claim)?

  1. go talk to your insurance

  2. You should have filed a report. If you had asked why, she would have said for your insurance company.

Yes, you should file a claim with your ins co. That is what you paid those premiums for. You bought the insurance, now use it!

$1500 ia a small claim, and they'll pay that minus whatever your deductible is. Even if you have a 1500 deductible (which is way high and unlikely), file the claim as the ins co will stand behind the repair.

With a small claim like this, you may not even be facing higher payments, and if so they'll be a lot less than the claim.

    Good luck.

  3. You will have to pay whatever the deductible is, $500-1000 usually. Check out your deductible. If it's high, you won't get much money from insurance but they will raise your rates more than likely.

  4. This would be a comprehensive claim and would not make your insurance go up. Look on your declarations page of your insurance policy to find out how much of a deductible you are liable for. Most are 100 bucks; I always request mine to be 0. Yes, ZERO but to compensate for the raise in insurance premium, take your collision deductible to the max.

Comprehensive is when something happens that is beyond your control such as a Deer (my big problem where I live), a "hit and run", or in your case.

Collision is when you are found at fault for the accident and this WILL raise your insurance premium (unless your insurance company has something similiar to accident forgiveness). If there is no ticket issued to you by the police, you cannot be held responsible in collisions declarations.

I am a very defensive driver; so, I don't expect to have any claims on my Collision declarations.
