Accident insurance question?

My mom backed into my car and caused damage on my front bumper and quarter panel and my insurance is under her and my name and I pay my insurance but the car that she was driving is in her name and is under a different insurance company. So what would happen if I reported this to my insurance company? Would they repair it? Would my insurance go up?

  1. You state that the insurance is under both of your names, but do you own the vehicle, or does your mother.  If your mother is the actual owner, her Property Damage Liability coverage may not apply.  Most policies exclude damage to property the insured owns including cars.

However, if she does not own the vehicle, then file a claim against her policy under her liability coverage.  Even if you report the loss under your own Collision coverage your rates should not go up.  You were not at fault for the loss.

  2. It is highly likely that your rates will increase as will your mom's under the other insurance. It is also likely that you have a deductible and would have to pay $300 - $1000 of the estimated damages. Try to work it out with your mom first.

  3. You need to call your insurance company and let them advise you what to do. DO NOT take advise from anybody else...you will do yourself a disservice if you listen to anyone other than your insurance company.

  4. She hit you. You report it to HER insurance company and HER rates go up.
