Acclamation defending the Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park
The Grade 1 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap will be the seasonal debut for the unbeaten since the last five races, Acclamation. The race will be held at Hollywood Park over a mile and two furlongs on Sunday, 10th June. Five other three-year-olds
will be racing beside Acclamation and will contest for the £96,774 prize money.
There is a mix of those who have already settled into the new season and then there are those too who will race their seasonal debuts through the Charles Whittingham Memorial.
The winning streak of five for the six-year-old did start off with the first attempt at Hollywood Park during the previous season. Unusual Heat’s bay horse won the Grade 2 Jimmy Murray Handicap Stakes on 14th May over a mile and four furlongs.
He was the 7/5 favourite winner riding with J. Rosario and enjoying the seven lengths’ lead.
Today he is defending the title that he already secured last year. Donald Warren’s under charge won the Grade 1 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap on 11th June at Hollywood Park over a mile and two furlongs.
Partner in success that time was J. Talamo with whom the 7/10 favourite winner of the race led the track by three and a half lengths.
Striking a hat trick, the Winning In Style foaled won the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes on 24th July at Del Mar over a mile and a furlong. He was paired up with J. Rosario for the race and the two enjoyed the lead of 3 ¼ lengths.
Caracortado was the 6/4 favourite of the race and ended third in line.
The six-year-old shoved the 12/5 favourite of the Grade 1 TVG Pacific Classic Stakes, Twirling Candy, into the second spot on 29th August at Del Mar over a mile and two furlongs.
Acclamation’s final spectacle of the season was in the Grade 2 Clement L Hirsch Turf Championship on 2nd October at Santa Anita over a mile and two furlongs. He was the 2/5 favourite winner with P. Valenzuela onboard.
The surface suits him, he is familiar with the distance too and will be paired up with P. Valenzuela for the race today. There is hardly anything that can hold him back from defending the title and entering the new season as impressively as exiting the prior
one.
