Acclamation set to stretch his winning run in Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar
It will be a mighty difficult task for the rest of the crew to stop Acclamation from stretching his winning streak to seven starts in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes, taking place at Del Mar on Saturday, July 21st.
Donald Warren’s charge went on a long vacation after five successive wins in October last year. He wrapped up his 2011 campaign with an excellent success at Santa Anita, where he notched the top spot in the Grade 2 Clement L Hirsch Turf Championship.
The six-year-old did not look rusty, when making his seasonal debut at Hollywood Park last month. On a firm surface, the bay horse did not face any trouble to be dominant in the Grade 1 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap.
The conditions are quite similar at Del Mar, and there is no reason why he should not have a big run this weekend. Owned by Peter Hilvers, E W & Judy Johnston & Mary Hilvers, the son of Unusual Heat has grabbed 10 wins so far in his career, and six of them
came in a row.
He is in such a good shape that the punters do not need to look elsewhere for the winner. The 1-mile 1-furlong event has attracted five entries, and among Acclamation’s opponents are: Hog’s Hollow, Interaction, Casino Host and Slim Shadey. The winning runner
will receive a big cash prize worth $180,000.
Slim Shadey looks to be the biggest threat to Acclamation. The 4-year-old has been consistent since the start of this season. He resumed his journey with a classy act in the Grade 2 San Marcos Stakes at Santa Anita.
After a close triumph, Simon Callaghan’s trainee started finding himself unlucky and as a result, finished second in three consecutive races earlier this season.
In the hands of D. Flores, the Phil Cunningham-owned was not impressive last time, but if he gets a slice of luck, the situation will get problematic for the rest. Interaction recently made a successful comeback, but winning a graded event would be a herculean
task for him.
The recent stats suggest that Acclamation is hot favourite for today’s mega meeting. The main danger is Slim Shadey, but we don’t expect him to do something extra special. Good luck to all the runners.
