  1. Genova is beautiful with lots to do and so is Cinque Terre.

Personally, I would stay in Cinque Terre rotating towns evey couple of days or you will loose lots of time in commuting.

Don't forget to visit the aquarium in Genova. It is spendid.

    Have fun!

  2. Stay there!!!  We stayed in a great place in Manarola, La Torretta Bed and Breakfast.  We were lucky and back packing through Europe in 1999 and just got off the train there and a local at the train station handed us a flier for La Torretta, what a find.  I hear over the years it has gotten very popular and I think Rick Steves' mentions it in one of his books as well.  We had a double room with a shared bath(sharing was not an issue at all) and the view was awesome.  The price was around $40-50 US at the time, bet it is closer to 100 euros now.  The walk to the Riomaggiore is breath taking, and it is a lot of fun hiking and boating between the 5 cities.  Please try the pesto lasagna, it was amazing!  The owner and designer of La Torretta is very garcious!

  3. Definitely stay there!

I spent three hours one night just waiting for the milk train to show up to take me back to my hotel in Levanto.

  4. Staying there would certanly be more beautiful and romantic. Book in advance, because accomodation is limited and this is high season.

  5. I would love to help you with this, but I would need to know more about what you are going to be doing in either place.  I used to live in Genova and spent a lot of time in Cinque Terre as friends of ours owned a vineyard and house there, so I am very familiar with both places.  Here is what I would need to know to better help you:

    1.  Length of stay

    2.  Plans during the stay

    3.  Will you have a rental car?

    4.  What do you like to do?

    5.  How many people are going and what ages?

And with regards to a previous answer:  Genova is NOT a dump - it is very beautiful and the oldest city center in all of Europe.  It was a walled city at one time and is absolutely beautiful and has a lot of history.  Yes, there is a port there and is industrial in some parts, but if you know where to go and what to see, then it can be a beautiful city with plenty to do and see !!!

My email is:  av8rgal@aol.com if you would like more help - or just post more here and I'll check back.

Have a wonderful trip - wish I were still there!

  6. Genova is nothing but a dump! Dirty, dangerous, unappealing...so on.

I just got back from Cinque Terre and had a great time, I stayed in Porto Venere. Great Great Place. Half hour boat ride to Cinque Terre. I suggest Grand Hotel Porto Venere.

  7. It all depends on what type of travelers you are. If you need some night life stay in Genoa and train back and forth. If you are in it for the romance and don't have a need for night life except your partner then stay in cinque terre. I just got back from there and am glad I stayed in St. Margharita were there was some night life.

    Jose
