I am awaiting my immigration approval here in Canada, but I would like to know what entails moving all of my personal effects and vehicle across the border. I will be driving my car across. I am not using a moving company. Does anyone know exactly what forms I need to have, for both my personal effects and my vehicle??

  1. You can ask here

    http://help.cbp.gov/cgi-bin/customs.cfg/...

  2. For your effects there is no form needed to export them out of the U.S. To import them your Canadian work authorization will usually suffice and be handled at the port of Canadian entry where you cross the border. To export your vehicle you will need several items, your clear title, if you have a lender listed you will need written proof from your lender that they are authorizing you to export the vehicle. See http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_t... for more info.

To import the car into Canada you will need a Form 1. They will give you this form when you are at the Canadian Port of Entry. See http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/... for more info. Good luck!

  3. This question is a Customs question more so than an immigration question.Your best bet would be to call the U.S. side of the port of entry where you plan to cross the border with your immigrant visa. Look up the number under Customs & Border Protection.

Start out your conversation by saying, "I have a Customs question." Ever since the creation of Customs and Border Protection, when immigration and Customs procedures became the responsibility of one agency, it's a toss up whether you'll get a legacy Customs Officer, a legacy Immigration Officer, or a newly trained officer.

So, make it clear that your question concerns Customs issues and increase your chances of getting the right person to answer your queries.

    Thank you for being conscientious.
