  1. "Porque no te callas?"

  2. I loved him when he stopped the gorilla ! Porque no te callas !

  3. Kudos to MelbRoyalist.  I like your answer to the question!

The Spaniards are not like the Danish or the British, who cherish their royals.  The Spaniards like the royal family with condition.  They admire King Carlos because he was able to end the coup in the 80's.  However, his heir needs to prove himself worthy of their loyalty.  There's no "grandfather clause" here.

  4. For more than three decades, King Juan Carlos of Spain has enjoyed the unquestioning loyalty of his subjects and the discreet respect of the media.

The king's role in helping restore democracy in Spain after the dictatorship of Franco won him the enduring gratitude and respect of a majority of Spaniards.

Born in Rome in 1938, the king returned to Spain at age 10, where he studied and was groomed as the successor to Franco. He was proclaimed king in 1975, after Franco's death, but steered the country toward a parliamentary system and now has little actual power.

During an attempted military coup in February 1981, the king went on television to denounce the putsch and urged the Spanish people to support the democratically elected government.

"He played an incredibly courageous role in the transition," said Paul Preston, a professor of history at the London School of Economics and the author of several books on Spain. "He won the right to be king."

The royal family remains popular among Spaniards, who in May 2007 voted King Juan Carlos the greatest Spaniard of all time, beating out Christopher Columbus and Miguel de Cervantes, the author of "Don Quixote."

  5. I loved it when he told Hugo Chavez to shut his face.

Sorry I don't know anything about the Spanish Royal Family. All I know is that he told Hugo Chavez of Venezuela to shut up. Because he was criticising past prime ministers of Spain and wouldn't shut up.

  6. I was living in Spain in 1980-81.  I was there for the coup.  Juan Carlos is my hero because of the way he handled that situation.  And I've always been rather vocal about it.

He is a great leader, and he has led Spain through a very difficult transition, from being a quite backward country (it was what Franco wanted) to being a leading country of this world.

    He's doing a great job!
