According to Karrie Webb, “Hard work pays off”
Karrie Webb, the Australian superstar said that hard work pays off. Nothing could be truer, especially in the world of golf. A look at the Webb’s career is enough to validate the statement.
Webb had a great amateur career where she scored a couple of wins at various events. She played on Australian Amateur Team and represented her country in at least six events. Her best came in 1994, when she was crowned Australian Strokeplay Champion.
This great amateur career was followed by an equally astounding professional career. Webb is one of the most prolific players in the world. She has 53 pro titles to her credit, no mean feat when you realize the fact that an average professional player wins
at most 10 to 15 titles in her entire career.
Her record includes an amazing 38 LPGA wins. This demonstrates her expertise in a sport that is chockfull of talented players looking to make it big on the pro circuit. She has played against some of the best players in the world and emerged victorious in
the competition.
What is Webb’s secret? According to her it is very simple. “Hard work pays off”.
She is not alone in her devotion to hard work. Almost every coach you meet emphasizes the importance of hard work and dedication to the sport, despite the setbacks. Setbacks are the necessary evil of any player’s career. To overcome them and to play again
is the true measure of a great player.
Contrary to the common perception, golf is a very demanding game. It requires patience and devotion as the technique is not mastered easily. Even when the player has learned the technique, it requires great practice just to perfect and retain the correct
technique.
This is not the end of the vows of the player. At this point, the player starts the amateur career. Playing on the local events and progressing up the ladder, the player learns many things about the game itself.
Amateur circuit is where the player actually learns about another important aspect of the game. The pressure of a professional event is something that wears off many players. Here is another place where hard work pays off.
The player could rely on their practice and the hours they had put in the golf practice. All that work prepares the player for the rigours of the golf tournament on a larger scale.
The player truly learns the value of hard work when they progress to the professional circuit. This progression is in itself a test of the hard work and dedication of the player. Once they move into a tour, all that hard work starts to pay off.
But the story does not end.
The player continues to work hard but the nature of the efforts changes. On the lower rungs of the ladder, the player had to concentrate on learning and practicing correct technique and style.
At the top of the ladder, the player now works hard to keep themselves competitive in the sport. This is again a tough process. A professional golf tournament is one of the most challenging things anyone sees in their life.
The pressure to play their best and compete against the best talent can only be countered by hard work.
Hard work pays off big time and at every stage of a player’s career.
