  1. According to Machiavelli many people believe that God and fortune are the sovereign rulers of human affairs. By this reasoning, it is best that men and women let things be governed by chance rather than toil uselessly to change them. Although this was a popular opinion at the time, Machiavelli does not fully endorse it. He claims that fortune rules roughly half our actions, but she gives us free reign over the other half. She often strikes where least expected and where one is most unprepared. She can raise a private citizen to princehood, or cast down the mightiest king.
