According to some, Taiwan is an overseas territory of the USA. How can you justify this?

I've seen some interesting arguments about it but they all ignore the Treaty of Taipei, in which Japan ceded rule of Taiwan to the ROC officially.

I'm not an expert on this, but I believe the reason why people say this is because as the point when that treaty was written, Taiwan was not actually Japan's to give to ROC. The USA has temporarily taken control of Taiwan and never specified who would be given control.

Of course, these technicalities are silly anyways. Even if USA "technically" has control, cause they don't really  have much influence over the people.
