After seeing the film 21 I wiki'ed card counting and it lists frequent shuffling as a method for throwing off card counters. But for counters the order of the cards are random anyways right? So why would it matter how many times the card are shuffled?

  1. Card counting involves recalculating odds based on what cards in the deck have already been played. The premise is those cards will not be replayed immediately; frequently shuffling can negate that premise. It would take many many shuffles to completely randomize the deck again however which is why it makes it harder not pointless.

  2. Card counters counts cards that came out and calculate the probabilities of what's left in the deck.

So, after some hands played, card counters can likely tell if there are more or less high cards than low card, and bet accordingly.

But, if you put back the cards and shuffle them, that reset the counts.

The counters would then have to start over. Start counting again, and wait longer for the right time to bet.
