Federer. I think the stats will reflect that when he retires.

It's almost a toss up.  In their primes, they would go back and forth like Borg/McEnroe  or Evert/Navratilova.  The deciding factors would be surface and conditions.

Hardcourt: They split

Indoor: They split

Grass: Slight edge to Sampras because of his overwhelming serve and volley attack.

Clay: Edge to Fed because of his superior movement and defense.

I have gone over this in my head a lot and I have seen both play their entire careers.  Head to head they are equals.  That only leaves intangibles to decide.

Sampras defeated tougher competition over a longer period of time.  (Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Agassi, Chang, Ivanisevic, Courier, etc)

Federer has held #1 for more consecutive weeks than any other player.

Mentally,  I rarely saw Sampras get shaken.  Fed I've seen on a number of occasions.  

So, as for now - Sampras is best.  If Fed gets more slams, he gets the nod.

It's same argument you make with Nicklaus and Tiger.  To be the GOAT you have to own the slams record.

theyre both good, but from a different era. i think in there days it would be a toss up to see who wins.

i'll always be loyal to sampras, but have to give props to fedrer.

I think we have to wait until Federer retires and see how much he achieved and if he beated sampras record of slams to decide. But talking about the game i think Federer is way better on the clay and would win 9 of 10 matches against Sampras. On the other hand, Sampras was magnificant in grass and would have a bit of an advantage over Fed, I would say 6 wins for Sampras in 10 matches. In hard courts they are/were both amazing and its an equalize. I dont deny that i have a preference for Federer because in my point of view was a shame to see "the best of all times" loose every year on 1st or 2nd round on the french open for weak players. Sampras was humiliated in clay a couple times which have never occured to Federer. Roger doesnt loose in straight sets since 2004 to the amazing clay player Kuerten!!
