My collegue has an 11 year old in her third grade class. He was retained twice already. So he should be in 5th grade. Is it legal for a student to be retatined twice?

  1. I am assuming yes since in when I was in the fifth grade there was a sixth grader who was fourteen. However, I do not think they can hold them back for three years.

By the way I live in Arizona.

  2. Is there a law regulating how many times a child can be retained?  I would think it would be as many times as necessary (barring major social differences with peers), but I don't know.

  3. I'm not sure there are any laws regulating this, but it seems that after two years or so, the child should be put into some kind of a continuation school.  It could be socially difficult both for the child and for the others in class to have a much older child there with them.

  4. I dont know why they detain a child, wasting his whole year. If he is regular to school but weak in studies, call his parents, tell them to to arrange extra coaching. I dont think so wasting his 2 years is good for him.
