  1. Your university should have the accounting program already mapped out for you and you won't be able to pick and choose in the basic classes.  Though usually your senior year you'll be able to pick one accounting elective (I chose auditing over government & not-for-profit because I want to be an auditor), but choices are rare.  Next you need your Bachelor of Business Administration or whatever your university calls it.  Then you need to check CPA requirements in your state if you want to take the auditing route.  In my state I need 150 hours to sit.   So now I'm in a MAcc program because I do not have enough after graduating with a BBA.

Wages are tough to say because they vary from state to state and city to city based on the cost of living.  I could tell you that in my state the average corporate job starts at about $55,000, but is slow to grow and will top out at about $65,000 depending on your job (VP and chief positions excluded).  In public accounting (CPA) it starts at about $48,000, but grows quickly and if you can last till about manager (5 years) it's about $75,000 and last till partner about $150,000.  These numbers may seem low, but cost of living where I'm from is pretty low and those salaries could buy one a nice house and a few nice cars.

  2. Basically, take college prep courses in high school and work toward an associates degree in business in college. You then specialize in accounting for your bachelor's degree.

Talk with your high school or college counselor. That's your first step.

  3. I started at 60K.  You have to graduate with a B.S. in accounting, they've got your classes all mapped out for you.
