Accrington Stanley vs. Newcastle United – Full time report
The two English teams came head to head in the round 2 of the Carling Cup today as they were both set to defeat each other to win a spot in the next round. The newly promoted English team, Newcastle United were out there at the Crown Ground to prove themselves against Accrington City as they went face to face for a spot in the next round of the League Cup.
The "underdogs" Accrington Stanley were at their home and were ready to take advantage of their own turf while they played their best 11 to beat Newcastle. The "league two" team, Accrington Stanley's previous records were not that bad as they won the previous match 3-0 at their home; against Macclesfield Town.
However, they drew the other league two games against Northampton Town and Aldershot town. During the League Cup round 1, they were to face "Doncaster Rovers" and they won the match 2-1 after extra time and they were now to face the totally "in form" Newcastle United who recently got promoted to the English Premier League. Accrington Stanley tried to play their best 11 as Alex Cisak, number 1 for the team, was standing as the goalkeeper of the club. Jonathan Bateson, Leam Richardson, Sean Hessey and Dean Winnard were the four full backs supporting him at the back. There were two defensive midfielders, Ray Puterill and Andry Proctor while Sean McConville was playing as a right midfielder. Chris Turner featured as a left winger with Craig Lindfield playing upfront as the "soul" striker while Adam Black was the player who was playing right behind him as an attacking midfielder.
On the other hand, Newcastle United featured a second class team because of their focus on the Premier League. They needed to prove themselves as they won the second league and got promoted to the English Premier League this year. Newcastle United had a pretty good start as they won the first match of the "championship" from Queens Park Rangers.
However, their Premier League start was not a dream-come-true. Their first match was against last year's runner ups, Manchester United and they tried to play defensively so that they could atleast draw the match. Newcastle's defense did not really work out too well as Manchester United were able to give them a 3-0 thrashing.
However, the next week's fixture shook the world as Aston Villa were defeated by a 6 goal margin. A hat trick by Newcastle's number 9 was enough to prove his worth to the club and the club's worth at the Premier League as they were able to win the match 6-0 at home while Aston Villa were just left stranded.
Newcastle were to face a "C" league team therefore they did not really play their best side this time round. It was the number 1 "Steve Harper" who took his position between the two poles but many of the first team players did not feature in the match. Ryan Taylor, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Ben Tozer were the four full backs for Newcastle United. The four midfielders that they preferred were Dan Gosling, Gutiarez along with Kevin Nolan and James Tavenier. The two strikers were not as suspected as Carroll did not feature for the club this time round and it was Peter Lovenkrands and Shola Ameobi who were playing in more of a "striking" role for the team.
The match started off slow but it was in the 36th minute that a corner was headed home by Newcastle's defender, Ryan Taylor. With so much pressure on the home side it was finally the midfielder Ray Putterill who scored a goal, right when the first half was about to end. A fabulous shot from the left foot was enough to make the score line even right before the teams left the field for half time. When the teams came back it was Newcastle all over the place. They showed the world why they were promoted as the striker Shola Ameobi scored a wonderful goal to help his team lead the game. Soon, in the 68th minute, it was the other striker, Peter Lovenkrands who secured the victory by scoring the third goal. It was "game over" for the home side but Sean Hessey gave them hope by scoring the second goal for his team right at the 90th minute mark but it was too little too late for the home team and they lost the match 2-3, while Newcastle were able to raise their hands in victory as they qualified for the next round of the League Cup.
