Ace 2-year-olds to emerge and conquer 2013 from Todd Pletcher’s barn
It is very hard to rise in this sport unless one makes some calculated decisions, and when resources are abundant and quality galore, the going gets even more tough, but a trainer like Todd Pletcher has been in the sport long enough to know what do when he has a good horse.
This time around though, his barn burns bright with some seriously good juveniles, who have responded to every call from their conditioner, and thus far, have gone on to show that they will run everyone ragged come their sophomore season.
However, nobody knows what the future holds for Pletcher’s remarkable 2-year-olds, and if there was an Eclipse Award for outstanding Juvenile Trainer, Todd Pletcher would have been the runaway winner, because there is just no matching what he has done this year in the division.
The eventual Eclipse Award winner for champion 2-year-old, Shanghai Bobby, is the highlight of Pletcher’s success in the division this year. The colt has been nothing less than spectacular, but it was Pletcher’s juggling act that restored success in every quarter for Shanghai Bobby, and recently the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile that will surely earn him the Eclipse Award, and the perfect end to a perfect 2-year-old career.
Though, we have seen Todd Pletcher do things, he wouldn’t have done normally in any other season, and that is racing west coast, especially on Betfair Hollywood Park’s cushion track. The decision to send Violence from New York helped the colt 10 qualifying points for the 2013 Kentucky Derby, when he turned in a front-wheeling display to capture the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity.
Right now, Todd Pletcher’s 3 trainees are into the top 10 on the 2013 Kentucky Derby points table, which is a familiar place for the trainer.
Todd Pletcher has another top 3 on the table with 10 points, and that in Overanalyze, who made such a strong case at the end of his juvenile season that people next year will have to choose one over the other to favour for the Kentucky Derby.
This is what makes Todd Pletcher’s situation so exciting, but come 2013 it will be clear, who is the leader of the pack, and the real contender.
