What are the most basic acoustic guitar strings that I should buy? I'll spend up to 15 dollars. Any suggestions?

  1. This is a good one, and cheap too!

  2. For a classical guitar try Nylon strings, for acoustic go with steel.

$15 should get you a good enough set.

  3. I play classical guitar and my guitar has nylon strings.  Some acoustic guitars have steel strings, which are not really suitable for classical music, and are also very hard on the fingers.  You may find you are able to practise for shorter periods if you have a steel string guitar, as it's quite painful at first.  I would definitely recommend nylon, especially when you first start.

Here's a tip: if you have a guitar with steel strings, you can replace them with nylon.  However, it isn't advisable the other way round, because if you buy a guitar with nylon strings the neck would not be strong enough to support steel.

If you go to a good shop, they may be happy to fit them for you.  I can't comment on cost, because I'm English and don't know how much they sell for in America.  I hope I've helped.  Good luck with your playing.

  4. It's OBVIOUS that many of the people who answered your question, don't know the difference between a Classical guitar and an Acoustic guitar.

If you have to ask what kind of strings to buy, the you can get some decent strings for about $5 a set.  You do NOT put NYLON STRINGS on an Acoustic Guitar... nor do you put Steel strings on a Classical Guitar.

Take the guitar to a local music store and have them recommend strings and even put a set on for you so you can see how it's done

AND... if you don't have a TUNER... then you can buy one when you buy the strings.

  5. For my nylon guitar I like D'Addarrio pro arte medium tension.

for my OM,  (steel string), I like John Pearse Bluegrass Mediums

This is more of a preference and if you ask 5 different guitarists you'll probably get 7 different answers, your best bet is to get a set and if you don't like them, don't get them again. And when you find you like a set keep buying those.

  6. I recommend Elixir Nanoweb light gauge strings.  I use these on all my steel string guitars.  They are around $15 but last a long time due to the Gore-Tex coating.  They also eliminate squeak.

By the way, the well-intentioned but incorrect person made a mistake; you can't put nylon classical strings on a steel string guitar because they don't have the ball end, among other reasons.

  7. I believe that there is a brand called "Lyon" that no one really has heard of. You can get them at Target for like $5 or $6. They will probably last you about 2 months or so
