  1. you will have to change trains in Chicago

but the trains are wonderful and neat

if you got a sleeper your meals are included in the fares

  2. There are Amtrak trains that cross the US from the West Coast to Chicago, and others from Chicago to the East Coast.  There used to be a transcontinental train called the Sunset Limited, but it no longer runs all the way to the East Coast.  In Chicago you can transfer between trains if you want to travel across the whole country.  Canada also has some trains that connect with the Amtrak system.

I have been on the trains several times, and the train cars are usually fairly nice.  Some of the train cars have been recently refurbished, while others are a bit older.  The train staff sometimes can be very friendly, other times they can be rude.  Most of the time the staff are friendly.  The dining car and lounge (or cafe) car serve food on board.  The dining car is included in sleeping car fare.  The coach cars have regular style seating.  The long distance trains have sleeping cars which offer a variety of different sized private rooms.

  3. Okay... You need to ride the Amtrak. The sunset limited goes from L.A. to New Orleans.

Empire Builder runs from Chicago to Seattle

Cresent runs from New York to New Orleans

Really, just go to www.amtrak.com and look up the train you might want to ride on. It also gives info on the passenger cars like the sleepers coach diner and the sightseer.

  4. If you want to know more about what it's like to ride Amtrak, please take a look at the Amtrak Traveler's Tip compiled by some friends of mine.  Here's a link to the website:

  5. Yeah, Amtrak has cross-country trains.  They are very nice, they have sleeper cars and everything.  But they are slow (about 3 days to get from coast to coast).  So they are more an adventure in itself rather than a mode of transportation.  But if you just want to relax with some friends and see the vast country without driving, they are nice.
