can you put Acrylic Enamels clear coat on top of Acrylic Enamels paint such as white in color?

would it even stick

  1. I agree with br549. If you want to clearcoat over acrylic enamel then you must use a activator/hardner in the acrylic enamel. If you don't then the clearcoat will wrinkle.


  2. You can clear over enamel with urethane clear, but you have a "time frame" for adhesion.

    If you clear within a 24 hour period, adhesion will occur. It is best to top with clear after about 2 hours for best adhesion. Any longer wait will require scuffing of the base enamel, and that will be visible in the final job.

    Your best bet is to use a base/clear system which is designed to work together, or use a quality enamel with hardener then wax occasionally.

  3. If the white you're putting it on is a topcoat, you will have adhesion problems if you don't properly scuff it first.  If it was designed as the undercoat in a two or three stage process, you should have no problems with adhesion.
