Acting degree?

Question

Hi I want to be a TV actor when I'm older... I'm wondering if it's worth it to get a major in acting before getting a agent and probably moving to Los Angeles... Or if I should just jump on my career and go, I'm young and already have a lot of experience in acting... And there's lots of famous actors that have not gotten majors in acting... So what would be the

best?

It really depends on what kind of position you're in when you graduate high school.

A degree in theatre or film or something is definitely not necessary to "make it" as a working actor. It can, however, tremendously help.

If you have the resources (i.e. money) and contacts to move to L.A. right after high school then you should go for it.

Otherwise, i'd concentrate on getting into a good college where you can get more experience, learn new skills, meet new people etc and then perfect your career plan.

Jumping into it would be a lot harder. Sure there are "lots" of famous actors who didn't major in it, but there are more who have.  And even more than those people are all the working actors with degrees who are making their living and being successful in the business, just aren't necessarily tabloid-famous.  Don't just "jump on your career and go".  Believe it or not it is a business like anything else.  Would you try to be a lawyer or teacher or businessman without learning about it first?  Ok, so its not impossible do act without a degree, but in a business so competitive as this you want to be prepared as possible.  People will respect you a lot more if you are college trained.  College programs are where you will get your training, learn how to succeed in the business, and make connections.  I know dozens of actors.  The ones who went to good schools are working and slowly making their way up.  The ones who didn't are floundering and struggling.  Doesn't matter what experience you have.  GO TO SCHOOL.
