Acting is what I love but is it practical?

So Here is the thing, I really do love acting. I've been in dozens of plays, and I just love doing it! The reaction from the crowd, being able to bring a characture to life.. And I just love entertaining people, being able to take them to another place and time, being able to drive an emotional story straight to their hearts..

I've always loved entertaining people, and I really want to persue acting as a career. And I would Def love to get into some Camera acting, not just for the money and fame but because its what I love to do.. But my mom dosen't think its practical at all.. Keeping in mind I'm 18 yrs old and am already done with highschool..

But I still value what people have to say, everyone keeps telling me that its foolish cause every body and their mama wants to be famous.. But its not for the money for fame for me, I just love doing it..

what do you think, should I go for my dream, or settle for something else that is more practical??

  1. girl same with me lol im bout to go a national competition in FL and if i win i get to go to college for free =) *snaps for me lol* but you should definately go to college for it cuz im thinking about going to carnegie mellon which is a great school for acting. im 16 in high school so i still have some time to go but you should not really worry what other ppl tell you and just listen to what your heart tells you.... its not pratical not in the least bit ^.^

  2. Girl, I know how you feel.

My advice, go to college for acting at a good school, but double major in a practical job. Everyone needs a backup if they are going to try to get into the arts. So, double major in acting and business, or acting and PR, or whatever floats your boat.

A back up is crucial, just in case you never get your lucky shot.

    Good luck!

  3. We make life by what we give. It may not be practical but imagine if everyone thought that way. If its your passion and what you love to do then you should give it a shot. Hard work will eventually pay off.

I'm enlisting in the Marine Corps. It's my passion. Although my parents dont think its a wise thing to do, I respectfully decline there ideas of what I should be. I dont think I'd be happier doing anything else. Ya know?

  4. hey !

listen. if its what you truly love go for it!!

camera acting as you say, is VERY hard to get into. there are probably thousands of aspiring actors/actresses out there that will never make it. and thats the truth.

BUT you said you liked the reaction from the crowd? how about broadway acting and musicals and stuff.

if you get the experience from there then you'll have a great resume for camera acting

try some drama classes at the major dramatic arts tech/tafe/uni in your area (i live in AUS so mine would be NIDA)

then you can try out for soap operas. they truly can get you far with your career.

good luck and never give it up

if all else fails.... how about a drama teacher? XD

  5. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation." Just think about that quote for a minute.

You write well with a lot of enthusiasm. I think that you'll probably be OK.

However, there is nothing wrong with pursuing acting in college.

  6. Then do it girl.  You are 18 and I don't think you need anyone's permission.  Just remember - while drifting from audition to audition, you have to eat, and if you do not have something you can do, you could land up in the type of 'acting' where you don't want to be. (catch my drift). Get into TV soap's as an extra or back round actor.  Very good for the CV.     Strength.

  7. I would be the first person to tell you to follow you heart and go after your dream. And it is right to sometimes get others' opinions, but sooner or later you will have to make your own decision.

Your true desire and passion in most cases, will pull you in the direction you were meant to be pulled.

Read the book The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.

One of the things she says in that book is that when you decide to do something, that the universe will conspire to help you. I believe that and have seen it over and over again in my life.

You say you love doing it, but the big question you will have to ask yourself if you have the passion to do what is necessary to be an actress.

Have a look at this page on my site for new and aspiring actors. It has links to lots of pages that have to do with different aspects of starting an acting career including, how to talk to your parents about what you want, a series of questions to ask yourself at the beginning. You'll also see what a typical day could look like for a new actress. http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/teen_...

    Good luck!
