Action continues at 2012 CSV Women’s Continental Olympic Qualifiers – Volleyball news
The 2012 CSV Women’s Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament is underway in Sao Carlos, Brazil and race for the Olympic ticket is in full swing.
The tournament took centre stage on May 9 and it is scheduled to be continued till May 14. At the end of the qualification tournament, on lucky team will clinch the Olympic berth. The winner will represent the Confederation South American de Volleyball (CSV)
at the 2012 London Olympic Games, which will take place from July 27 to August 12.
Teams from Peru, Venezuela, host Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, and Uruguay are on board to showcase their thirst for victory.
The tournament started off with Wednesday and featured three matches. On the opening day of the tournament, Peru, Venezuela, and Brazil pulled off success in their respective matches.
Peruvian ladies downed team from Chile in straight sets. The Milton Olaio Filho sports hall in Sao Carlos, Brazil set up an excellent field of play for the opening match of the CSV Qualifiers, while Puerto Rico stamped 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-6) win over Chile.
Puerto Rico took 59 minutes to clinch success in the match.
In the next match, Venezuela launched power on tough rival Argentina. The match spanned over four sets and continued 1 hour and 41 minutes. Argentinean team put the competitors to a hard trial but could not succeed in the match. Venezuela sent 3-1 (19-25,
25-20, 25-17, 25-23) on board to claim victory.
Third match was more of one-sided affair between Brazil and Uruguay. The Brazilian women totally dominated the scene and finished the match in straight sets. The set scores were 3-0 (25-4, 25-12, 25-7). Around 4,500 spectators witnessed the match at Milton
Olaio Filho sports hall in Sao Carlos. The home team delighted the local fans with a great win in the opening match.
Peru continued with success on day-2 of the tournament and added second win to its count. Peru held off Venezuela for 3-1 (25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-13) victory in the first match of day-2 on Thursday.
“It was only our second game,” Peru setter Elena Keldibekova said. “We are using these first games to get ready for more difficult matches against teams such as Argentina and Brazil, that will be key games for the qualification for the Olympic Games.”
The next fixture brought Argentina in competition with Chile. Argentinean ladies recovered from their previous loss to Venezuela and defeated Chile 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-9).
“In the opening round against Venezuela, we did a good first set and, later, we did not keep a good level,” Argentina coach, Horacio Bastit explained. “Against Chile, we knew that we would have more facility, but we also did a good game. We went well.”
Host Brazil closed day-2 with a splendid win over Colombia 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-19).
So far, Brazil and Puerto Rico are the only teams in the competition that have not dropped any match. They are likely to meet in the final match of 2012 CSV Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament as well.
