I need someone to point me to some link that shows what action the international community has taken to stop the risks that landfills pose.

  1. most land fills use a plastic liner so they don't contaminate ground water

  2. Actions such as these are driven by the US EPA, check their website for superfund site regulations.  Their laws, and the individual state's DEP laws govern the construction and maintenence of the fills. Different countries have widely varying laws so the international community does not have much do do with it.

  3. you will not find any specific examples. Land fill areas are regulated by local governments, and to protect themselves from any scrutiny they do not keep accurate documents. the problem with land fills is in the poorer countries every thing goes in, and no one realizes that they are contaminating there ground water supply.
