I did 8 years active, Navy. I got out and realized how boring the civilian world is, so I re-enlisted into the reserve for two years. Now, I realize how boring the civilian world + the reserve is. So, my question is, if I were to go active again, with 8 years + 2 reserve (10 total), could I retire at 20 with full benefits? Or would the 2 reserve years mess me up?

  1. As far as your reserve time goes, think of al the times you were put on orders during those two years (2 weeks a year annual training, ADSW, ODT, Schools, etc) add that up and those were days that count as active duty. Add that to your 8 years and that is what you have

  2. The two years in the reserve won't count towards retirement - you'll get credit only for the active duty (AT) days you did while in the reserve.  I did the same thing in the Army - got out after my first enlistment did some time in the national guard and then went back on active - I have 23 years total but need one more for retirement.

  3. You would have 10 years in. No matter how you served it you would have it. Even if you did 4 years got out for 3 and went back in you would still have 7 years because of non drilling reservist.

  4. The two years of reserve duty will contribute to the overall 20 years, but you'll be a little short on retirement points. That can be fixed fairly easily by extending your final reenlistment by a few months.

    Good luck!
