Activision head Bowled over by Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3’s community boss wants to play BF3
The confusingly bizarre world of Battlefield 3 versus Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has taken yet another twist in the battle for the number one online shooter in the market, as Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s head of communication, has admitted he is looking
forward to purchasing a copy of Battlefield 3.
Just to simplify things a little further, and also to confirm the news half the world may find shocking, a high ranking member of Infinity Ward, the studio developing Modern Warfare 3, has admitted that he will buy a copy of Battlefield 3, its fiercest competitor,
when the game releases.
To put things in perspective, it is like the Chief Executive Officer of Nike walking into an Adidas store, and replacing his Nike running shoes with a pair of Adidas ones.
While the analogy may sound a tad bit on the extreme side, anyone who has been following the on-going war of words between the two publishers will know exactly why it is accurate.
Electronic Arts denied an Activision representative from entering their booth at E3, where there was a demo of Battlefield 3. Later Activision taunted that Modern Warfare 3 was a game, while Battlefield 3 was more of an engine.
The war of words continued for some time, with little respite from either side, though EA did acknowledge they felt sympathy for their rival when a majority of the storyline for Modern Warfare 3 was leaked on the internet prematurely.
However, whether the latest statement by Bowling is an extending of the olive branch towards their rivals, or a mischievously evil plot to boost their own sales, seems unclear at the moment.
Bowling explained that there was room in the market for both the first person shooter games to thrive, as they both provided quality and different experiences from one another.
While it may sound like Bowling was laying the foundation for an excuse to buy the game himself, he did have a valid point when he said, “I'm very aware that we have two very different audiences and we're delivering two very good and very different experiences,"
he said, "so I think the baiting is built up more of these two really passionate communities - and they should be really passionate about their individual games - getting at each other, and that's been happening forever.”
He did end with a pitch for Modern Warfare 3 when he explained that the “kind of gameplay you get from Call of Duty is very different from what you get anywhere else.”
Gamers can find out for themselves which game comes out on top as both titles are scheduled for release around the holiday season.
