Activision just getting started with Call of Duty – Video Games Update
Activision has yet again managed to upset gamers when it registered several domains related to Call of Duty (COD) games which suggest that the Black Ops and Modern Warfare games will be getting a lot of sequels.
According to whois.domaintools.com, Activision has apparently registered thirteen Call of Duty related domains and from these names it is clear that Activision plans to take both of its Call of Duty games, Black Ops and Modern Warfare, up to the sixth game.
In other words, Activision just confirmed that it is not giving up on the Call of Duty brand and probably has seven more sequels planned.
This is bad news for gamers in general as even though COD games sell a lot each year but they are becoming repetitive and the fact that Activision is recycling a modified version of the Quake 3 engine, first used in COD 4: Modern Warfare, for every COD game
since doesn’t help either.
It is a common criticism from gamers that every COD game since COD 4: Modern Warfare looks the same and pretty much plays the same. It’s almost like Activision is releasing full priced expansion packs each year with a short single player campaign and some
multiplayer maps thrown in.
The reason why Activision would be so quick to register the domain names is pretty clear. Last year Activision had a serious problem when some anonymous user registered ModernWarfare3.com and was posting Anti-Call of Duty material on the site. Traffic was
later being redirected towards Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 3 homepage but Electronic Arts denied that it had anything to do with it. Activision had to go through many legal hurdles and had to pay $2,600 to shut the site down and have the rights to the domain
transferred over.
Even though COD sales are stronger than ever, many analysts believe that the COD bubble is about to burst soon and the Guitar Hero fiasco is about to repeat again. Guitar Hero was another one of Activision’s massively popular franchise which got stale because
of a new game being released every year with little or no improvements leading to Activision shutting down the studio. COD: Black Ops 2 is set to release this fall but so far pre-orders for the game have been fewer than those for Modern Warfare 3 last year.
A sign of things to come?
