CoD based social networking platform has 1.5-million premium subscribers and with more than three times as many regular subscribers - Activision look to expand on service.
Video games have come a long way from being a simple past time, or an entertainment product as an increasing number of franchises in the industry are focusing more on providing an experience instead of just a simple product.
One example of this is Activision’s social platform based on the Call of Duty franchise of video games, Call of Duty Elite. The beta was released and tested out during the twilight years of Black Ops, before receiving a full launch the day Modern Warfare 3 was released.
Since then the service has grown to have over 7-million users, out of which 1.5-million have subscribed for the premium package.
During an earnings call, Activision boasted that Elite was the, “third largest interactive subscription service behind World of Warcraft and Xbox Live, both of which have been around for many years.”
The publisher also declared that they were intent on keeping things fresh for the service and that assured its users that they would be getting, “additional features in the next 60 days.”
At the same time, Activision also announced that Elite 2.0 was in development and would be launched with the release of the next instalment in the next game of the Call of Duty series.
“We’re (Activision) already hard at work on Elite 2.0, with several innovative features being developed to work hand-in-hand with our new Call of Duty release.”
Whether or not that is an expansion for the current service or a new service altogether is still a question that has gone unanswered. Yet, if one was to speculate then chances are those gamers who purchase the next game in the Call of Duty series will get access to it.
Activision also confirmed that they were well into development of the next instalment in Treyarch’s line of CoD titles, with many reports suggesting that the game could very well be titled, ‘Black Ops 2’.
We will have more on that story as and when it breaks, but in the meantime what does the reader think of the Elite service? Let us know in the comments section below.
