Activision to publish Angry Birds Trilogy – Video Games Update
Rovio Mobile, the Finnish developer, has announced that it will be bringing the first three Angry Birds games to consoles and the Nintendo 3DS in partnership with Activision.
Rovio Mobile launched the first Angry Birds game on the iPhone and the iPod Touch in December 2009 and later ported it to other mobile devices after the game was a huge hit with casual gamers. Due to the overwhelming success of the game, the developer went
on to release three additional sequels which included Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, which was a tie-in with the animated film Rio and the recently released Angry Birds Space.
Even after the sequels were launched, Rovio Mobile continued to support the previous games through updates which added additional episodes ensuring that gamers don’t delete the App when they are done with all the levels.
The mobile games have turned into a cultural phenomenon as now almost everyone has Angry Birds installed and present on some device in the household. The game has won countless awards including Best App of the Year at the UK Appy Awards, Best game for handheld
devices at the Webby Awards and was awarded the fourth best iPhone game by IGN.
Activision announced today that the game will be making its debut on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Nintendo 3DS. Activision has made it clear that the release will not be a cheap port but will be ‘built from the ground up’ for the platforms it is being
released on.
The Xbox 360 version is announced to have Kinnect support. This is great news for Microsoft as the game is likely to shift many Kinnect units after launch. Playstation Move support was also confirmed for the Playstation 3 version. Rovio has not announced
if there will be any special features in the 3DS version apart from 3D support.
In addition to motion controls, Angry Birds Trilogy will feature high definition visuals on the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Rovio executive told IGN, “You can think of the game as the ultimate collector's edition. There are new cinematics, extras and
other entertaining content. In addition, all of the existing material has been uprezzed and re-treated for the high-resolution and big screen.”
The question remains, is Angry Birds Trilogy really necessary for consoles, as the game is primarily designed for hardware with touch-screen and might not work well with motion controllers or regular gamepads. Angry Birds Trilogy will be out this holiday
season.
