Question:

Activities for children?

I'm a volunteer at a homeless shelter. I help occupy kids for a few hours every Monday afternoon to give the parents time to do things (all of them are ages 3-5 currently) and I'm running low on ideas.

So the question would be obvious: Does anyone have any fun ideas for kids to take up an hour or two?

  1. If you have a yard try to teach them an outdoors games..

you can play hide and seek, trip to Jerusalem or if you want

do some activities that can hence their imagination.

  2. ok make winter mittens dec...then hang up put yarn in between them~~save a box for all of ur art scraps then one day have scrap art day let them do as they plz with ur supervision~~~christmas trees and decorate with cake toppings

  3. -They could make collages from old magazines-----just of things they like, their favorite foods, things that make them feel good, or cut out pictures of things they want for Christmas. (some will need help with the scissors, I'm sure.)

-Exercise. Do stretches, jumping jacks, etc. This won't take up a couple of hours, though.

-Duck, duck, goose; freeze tag; hide and seek; I spy; musical chairs; etc. (you have probably tried these!)

    - 3-5  yr olds love to pretend! Play "house," pretend cooking, role playing as in a doctor's office or as teachers, etc.

    - Paint with water colors----there are tons of pictures for every occasion to color or paint at http://www.coloringbookfun.com

Or have them draw their own pictures of what they want to be when they grow, or of their favorite person.

-Have everyone bring their favorite book.

-Bake cookies and let them decorate their own. (not sure what kind of resources you have for something like this, of course)

  4. Get some colouring sheets and a box of crayons.

  5. coloring books,  story time [you read a story to them] give them paper and let them draw pictures,  candyland, listen to music and let them dance or exercise to it,  let them watch cartoons or a kid movie,  if weather permits, let them play with a jump rope or throw a ball around to each other,,,[if budget allows] take them to mc donalds and let them eat lunch and play at the inside playground... let them decorate cup cakes,  teach them to count,[depending on ages] , make Christmas cards for the mom's... take pictures of them and tape picture to cards....  musical chairs,  a picnic outside

  6. see who could complete three sudokus the fastest but first show them it is really fun and takes up time

  7. You can go to starfall and download activities for learning that are both fun and educational, and good for you volunteering at that shelter!!
