Activity Adaption?

my assignment is too adapt a classroom activity for a child with special needs. Specify the developmental objective of the activity, the type of disability for which you are accommodating the activity and how the activity will be adapted to make it accessible to the child's developmental needs.

I don't want anyone doing the assignment for me and researching it. I just want some ideas or topics on what I could do to help me get started on it.

  1. First decide on the disability. There are many different special needs. Once you have decided the type of disability for which you will be adapting the activity, then decide what activity to adapt. Make sure it is within the child's actual ability. For instance trying to adapt a 5th grade math lesson for a Down Syndrome child, would be inappropriate. However, adapting a counting lesson would be great.

Let's say that we have a Down Syndrome child who is in a 2nd grade general ed math class. The class is learning to count coins and will be counting dimes, nickels, pennies and quarters. While the objective for the class might be to add these coins to produce $1.00, the developmental objective for the Down Syndrome child might be as follows:

The student will be able to select all of the pennies from a mixed group of coins and count them up to ten.

It is important for your lesson to describe the ability levels of the child for which you will be adapting the lesson. Down Syndrome children typically have difficulty with abstraction, but can count and match.

  2. Blindness would probably be the easiest special need to adapt to. You could adapt an art lesson, or a game that would supposedly require vision to enjoy. If you need help just e-mail me at Gryfindorgirl90@aol.com. I'm blind, but have also volunteered in classrooms for children with developmental delays. I'd be glad to help.
