Question:

Activity Ideas?

My niece and nephew, 5 and 8, are visiting for a couple of weeks, and we are low on funds. I'm looking into some things in town to do that are inexpensive. I was wondering if anyone knows of some good activities/crafts/games to do with them at home as well so that they don't get bored while they're here.

  1. Go to Michals(a store) and buy some very cheap craft like coloring or what ever they like and have them make crafts

  2. There are thousands of crafts that you can make from common household items. You don't necessarily have to buy anything but you may want to pick up a few essentials from the dollarstore like glue or other things mentioned in any of the following crafts. Dollarstores are goldmines for cheap craft essentials and games.

Earth necklace pendant or Window light catcher:

    Tissue paper flowers:

    Egg carton sea creatures:

You can also find coloring pages online that you can print out in different themes.

As well as crafts and coloring, you could do things like make bubble solution out of dish soap and water and make bubble blower thingies out of any wire you may have laying around or anything you can rind really.

Sidewalk chalk is another cheapie but goodie.

    Hope this helps :)

    Have fun!

  3. Start an online digital scrapbook at PhotoAlbum.com. Obviously you already have a computer with internet access so that is all you need.

  4. If you have a sprinkler, you can water the lawn and entertain them at the same time.

Also, plant a small seedling tomato plant or something like that so they can watch it start growing and take home with them .

Make a scavenger hunt list of things to find during the weeks they are with you.  make items that are difficult to find, but not impossible.  Then take them places, like the park, or neighbors yard, or thrift store looking for the items.

Also, if you have a big cardboard box and some finger paint, they will have a BLAST making a fort or playhouse out of it.

Or two boxes, one for each of them,  a fort and a playhouse..............

I'm getting so excited about the summer fun, can I come over and play????   :)

  5. Check out www.dltk-kids.com

They have plenty of ideas to occupy youngin's.

  6. Home Depot has a free build-something on either the first or last Saturday of the month - you can call to find out when.  It's really cool and they get a free Home Depot Apron.  As far as parks - Brushy Creek Park has a free spray park - sandwiches for an early lunch and a blanket make it a perfect "free" activity.  The park opens a half hour after sunrise - I would get there somewhat early like 9:00 or so...  they also have a cool playground.  The playground in Canyon Creek is also really nice and covered!    My nephew was recently in town and we set up a scavenger hunt through out the inside and outside of the house.  Pie crust is great to cut into all shapes and pieces - bake with lots of cinnamon and sugar and it is a fun snack too!

  7. Going to the park is always a great idea. Also, Michael's offers free craft days throughout the summer months for younger kids, you might want to check it out at your local Michael's. Another inexpensive fun thing for little kids is geocaching the only requirements are a GPS, a cheap one is fine, and a used toy or item that is no longer wanted. In order to fully understand what geocaching is, if interested go to the Geocaching.com website and see how it's done.
