Question:

Actors familiar with Sweeney... need help choosing?

I have an audition in a couple weeks, and someone suggested I do a Sweeney Todd song. So I thought "The Worst Pies in London," "Not While I'm Around," or "Green Finch and Linnet Bird." If you haven't guessed already, I am a soprano. Does anyone know which song does better in auditions? Thanks.

  1. I agree that Green Finch would be better since you are a high soprano. The Worst Pies In London would probably be good, although it is a song for an alto and it has insane little 8th and 16th rests at random places. But, if you nailed it, it would be a spectacular audition and it would show the directors that you are serious about what you want to achieve.

  2. I'd say that you should choose Green Finch and Linnet Bird" or "Not While I'm Around." It really doesn't matter the gender, as long as you can sing it well. If you were to be audition with a song from the musical you are auditioning for, you would need to choose a female song, but in this case, get someone else to listen and choose based on what they enjoyed to listen to your voice sing. The impression you give with the song wit your voice is different than with other's voices. Also, age plays a big role. I'd say if you are 14 or younger, go for "Not While I'm Around." Go for "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" if you are on the older side of the teen years.

But if you really have the voice for it, "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" would be amazing to see in the right voice that can get that high. I have trouble with it even, and I am also a soprano that has her majority of problems reaching lower notes.

Finally, take into consideration which you enjoy to sing. If you are enjoying it, then most likely the audience will enjoy it, even when you are auditioning. It really matters if you are enjoying standing up there and singing the song--it'll help you do your best to sing it.

  3. I agree with the above posters that Green Finch would be best but to warn you in the musical Johanna is almost like an Opera part and its super high

  4. Well, "Not While I'm Around" is sung by an alto, and beyond that for most of the song a boy character.

The Worst Pies in London is a good song, but it requires props for a good feel of the song and it is sung mostly in mezzo.

Green Finch and Linnet Bird would be your best choice because it can really show off a high voice and is sung completely in the soprano range. However, of these songs it is the hardest to sing.

    Good Luck!
