Can anyone help me to find out what is REALLY the internet speed I have? Meaning - the computer tells me that I am connected at 100Mpbs - but there are days when I can watch a movie online with no problem at all and there are days when the d**n buffering just does not happen!!!! What is the cause and how do I fix it?

  1. The 100Mbps is the connection limit of your hardware. Lan cards communicate at 10/100/1000 Mbps.

The "speed" of the internet is dependent on many factors, your ISP's backbone speed, the server that your connecting to it's speed. The amount of traffic that is affecting your speed can be variable.

Go here and choose a server near where you live and it will give you a "real" world speed test.  When you notice your movies are slow, re run the test and notice the difference in speed from the earlier test.

  2. Try these different sites for speed tests then compare:

    http://www.bandwidthplace.com/

    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

  3. Unfortunately, 100mb/s is not your actual internet speed :( It is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone's home internet to be that fast. That is just the speed from your computer to the modem/router, not the internet. Unfortunately, there isn't a way that i know can fix this. To find you ACTUAL max internet download rate, go to http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

whatever result you get for your download rate, divide it by 8, then you get YOUR ACTUAL download rate. (Speedtest results are in kiloBITS and download rates are in kiloBYTES [8 bits = 1 byte])
