Emirates Team New Zealand faced a tragic incident on the penultimate day of 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 8, as they had a collision with France’s Groupe Edmond de Rothschild. The Kiwis had to pull out of the event, as the damage to their boat was irreparable
overnight. At the conclusion of Day 4, Emirates Team New Zealand skippered by Adam Beashel finished eighth in the standings.

1. Alinghi (SUI), Tanguy Cariou, Yann Guichard, Nils Frei, Yves Detrey = 187 points
2. Luna Rossa (ITA), Max Sirena, Paul Campbell-James, Alister Richardson, Manuel Modena = 169 points

Adam Beashel explained the crash and said, “We were comfortably sailing on starboard tack with Groupe Edmond de Rothschild behind us. We were not paying much attention to them, assuming they would dip us. At the last second I saw them bow down trying to
go behind us, but there just wasn’t any room.”
The Kiwi skipper added, “There was a loud bang as they went into our transom. Unfortunately it’s not going to be an overnight fix, so this is the end of the regatta for us. We can only hope that we have done enough for redress to allow us to salvage something
for the season.”
The Emirates Team New Zealand was sailing on starboard tack and Groupe Edmond de Rothschild were right behind them. Not paying any attention to the French team, Beashel and crew were on their way to the finish mark when Pierre Pennec skippered French boat
tried to bow down to get behind the Kiwi team but there was not much water to do that so they hit the boat hardly and broke it from the back.
