Valthaty scored a 62 off 50 balls, smashing 3 sixes and 6 boundaries in the Indian Premier League match against the Delhi Daredevils on Sunday, May 15, 2011.
"Paul has an attacking style of play and in such a style results are always inconsistent. I know this because I'm speaking through personal experience," elaborated Gilchrist while responding to a comment regarding Valthaty’s inconsistent batting scores in
the Indian Premier League.
His side won by 29 runs after setting a target of 171. The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 roster failed to achieve the par score and stumbled at a total of 141.
After a great start to this year’s IPL, when Valthathy plundered 120 against Chennai Super Kings, his performance saw a slump, receiving much criticism in turn.
Gilchrist, while throwing light on Valthaty’s batting style, lauded him for the hard work and effort he puts in each of his performances.
"In his style of play there are extended periods when you don't do well but in the Twenty20 format of play you have to play like that. That's the nature of T20 and that's what Paul is doing. For me, Paul is a very hardworking player. He is a total team player.
Even if you look at his other scores in this tournament, they have all been quick ones (at a rate far more than a run a ball),” Gilchrist advocated.
Referring to his personal batting style, the former wicket keeper and batsman shared that he can totally relate to Valthaty’s situation.
Gilchrist has always encouraged and backed Valthaty during his heydays as well as during the times when his scores would witness a slump.
Lauding the player for his skill and talent, the skipper said that it is only a matter of time before the young lad will be ranked amongst the top batsmen.
