Adam Groom changes to belly putter for the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters
Standing on the last tee of the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters last year, Adam Groom tied for the lead. A few moments later, he was sharing the third spot, thanks to a double bogey to end the tournament.
Last year, he used the traditional short putter. However, that did not help him out, as he had to finish the final hole using four putts.
This year, he decided to change his approach and added a long putter, also known as belly putter, to his bag.
Groom has been practicing his short game for the last one month, as he himself admitted that he moved to Melbourne and met his coach Adam Fraser, for bringing improvements in his game.
“I went to Melbourne recently and worked with my coach Adam Fraser,” he said. “We worked a lot on my short game and I have changed to a belly putter which I’ve never tried before. I’ve been training with it for the last month and it feels nice. It will be
nice to have a win and be in contention regularly”.
While talking to a press conference on Monday, he expressed his wish of getting into contention once again and ending the tournament on a better note this week.
He also confirmed that his parents will come and watch him play, live on the course. He stated that his parents will work as a motivational factor and expects to perform better this week.
“We’ve got a big stretch of tournaments coming our way so I’m preparing myself for that. I’m hoping to have a fast start here. My parents are coming on Tuesday to watch me play, so hopefully it will spur me on to play better,” he said.
In the meantime, Mithun Perera of Sri Lanka also aims a strong finish this week, eyeing the first Asian Tour victory of the season.
Perera is currently playing his rookie season on the tour and has played a total of five events so far.
Among all his appearances, he never missed the cut and performed impressively at the ISPS Handa Singapore Classic, where he tied for the second place.
