Adam Jones’ homer helps Baltimore Orioles defeat Kansas City Royals, 5-3: MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles’ centre fielder, Adam Jones had a notable day with the bat as he went 2-for-5 including a solo homer and two RBIs in the Orioles’ 5-3 victory against the Kansas City Royals at Oriole Park, Baltimore, on May 24.
Jones expressed his excitement as, “First time I ever got one like that. I just wanted to make sure I came down properly. It's not funny, but it is funny. It felt good getting punched in the stomach and ribs.”
During the first inning, the Royals scored their initial run when Jeff Francoeur singled to left field and Alex Gordon posted a run. The score-card was 1-0 at the end of first inning. No score was added from both sides in the second inning. The Royals got a 2-0 lead during third inning on the solo homer of Gordon (408 feet) off the right field.
The fourth and fifth inning went in favour of the pitchers as they threw the ball in perfect areas to stop the run-flow of the batters. The score-board was unmoved until fifth inning. Both the teams continued to score runs as the Royals added one run while the Orioles contributed two runs. The Royals were leading 3-2 after the sixth inning.
Billy Butler drove a shot towards the centre field and Francoeur scored a run for the Royals during sixth inning. On the other side, Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters both singled to complete a two-run campaign. In the seventh and eighth inning, the batters did not give a single run to their team and it seemed as the Royals took a day with a convincing win.
Joakim Soria was much expensive as he gave away three runs to the Orioles in the crucial inning. The Royals’ Manager, Ned Yost, said of Soria, “It's been a bit of a struggle for him right now. ... It's just location more than anything else. He's normally a guy whose location is pinpoint, but it's been off a little bit.”
The Royals’ winning chances went down in the ninth inning when the Orioles accelerated by posting three runs and got a 5-3 lead. Felix Pie doubled to left field and J.J. Hardy took one run. Jones hit a tie-breaking run with his one-run homer (409 feet) towards the centre field. Pie made a single in the end.
