Adam Jones’ homer helps Baltimore Orioles edge past Seattle Mariners, 2-1 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles’ centre-fielder, Adam Jones was impressive with the bat as he struck a decisive homer and went 3-for-4 in the Orioles’ 2-1 victory against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field, Seattle on June 1.
The Orioles saved their clean sweep in a three-game series and finished 2-1. During the first inning of the game, no run was added on the score-board as the pitchers threw the ball in good line. The fielders also cooperated well to stop the runs of the batters.
In the second inning, both teams scored one run to tie the game 1-all. J.J Hardy hit a solo homer (372 feet) towards left-field. Jack Wilson singled to centre-field, Miguel Olivo posted a tie run and Wilson advanced to second base on a wide throw. The Mariners
got off the mark when Mike Wilson was popped out at short-stop position.
The pitchers controlled the scoring of runs by the batters from the third to seventh inning. The Orioles’ starter, Brian Matusz pitched superbly as he threw five innings with an ERA of 1.59 and gave away just one run on four hits including one earned run.
He struck out three batters and did not allow a walk to any batter on his 84 pitches.
The Orioles’ Manager Buck Showalter was satisfied with the way Matusz pitched in a game. He said, “It's a work in progress. [It was] a good start for him statistically. He thought this would be a good spot for him to start in, and hopefully it will carry
on and he will continue to give us a chance to win.”
Jones homered (434 feet) to left-field and the Orioles went ahead 2-1 in the eighth inning. The Ninth inning passed with no run from both sides. Jones said of his game, “I had a 1-0 pitch to drive and I just was under the ball and I fouled it off. I just
told myself, 'Get on top of the ball, stay on top of the ball,' and he missed down and in and I didn't.”
Michael Pineda permitted one run on six hits and struck out seven batters in seven inning pitches.
