Adam LaRoche wants three-year deal as he meets with Mike Rizzo - MLB Update
A meeting regarding the signing of a new contract with Adam LaRoche and General Manager Mike Rizzo of Washington Nationals has taken place.
There is no revelation regarding money yet but the issues between both the parties about duration of the agreement have come to light.
LaRoche told Rizzo that he wants a three-year deal, which the latter is reluctant to offer.
The Nationals do recognise an incredible role that LaRoche played for success for the club during 2012 season but they have concerns as well signing him for more than two years.
LaRoche is a free agent at the moment. If not re-signed by the Nationals, it will not be difficult for him to find a place in another organisation.
However, that will not be his desired destination because he likes playing for the Nationals. In light of this, he will try to come to terms with Washington and sign a new agreement with the team.
As far as LaRoche’s recent conversation with Rizzo is concerned, both parties are genuinely progressing ahead to ink the deal at the earliest.
Trying to convince officials of the Nationals so that they offer him the desired contract, LaRoche uttered that he is not asking something like a four or five year deal but what he feels is deserved by him.
The Nationals acquired outfielder Denard Span as part of a trade deal the other day, which to some extent has reduced their infield worries by allowing the team the option of sending left fielder Michael Morse at first-base.
Against this backdrop, LaRoche is not needed by the club as much as he was before the deal.
Rizzo has talked about the matters that were discussed in the meeting with LaRoche.
“It was a good, productive talk,” Rizzo said. “He’s a terrific guy I have a lot of respect for. . . . We didn’t talk dollars and cents at all. That’s for me to talk to his agent. I gave him kind of a global view of what we’re trying to do with him and the
reasons for it. There’s a reason and a rationale for the offers we’ve made to Adam.”
With Baseball Winter Meetings just a few days away, it will be interesting to see the reports surfacing about the possible contract extension of LaRoche.
After the Winter Meeting, real progress made in negotiations between agent of LaRoche and the Nationals will be known by the fans most probably.
