The latest stop of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro New York, continued to deliver intense surfing action with the ninth and tenth heat of Round 2 on Wednesday, September 7, at the Long Beach, New York.
Australia’s Adam Melling out-performed his compatriot, Matt Wilkinson, in the ninth heat to secure his place in Round 3, consequently removing his rival from the competition.
The tenth heat witnessed Australia’s Kai Otton walk away with top honours after prevailing over his compatriot Chris Davidson, and extending his life in the event by qualifying for Round 3 while eliminating his opponent from the competition.
With four-to-six foot waves on offer at the primary event site, the stage was set for an exciting match-up as the world’s best surfers took each other on in a battle for survival.
The 26-year-old Melling found himself pitted against Wilkinson in the ninth heat. As the heat kicked off, Melling got off to an excellent start, locking a wave to pull off a series of impressive stunts to collect 8.17 points.
Wilkinson rose to the occasion and responded with a 7.17-point wave to narrow the gap that separated him from his rival on the scoreboard. Keeping the momentum going, he immediately followed it up with a 6.80-point wave to take his heat-total to 13.97 points
and move into the lead.
Melling patiently searched for an adequate response to his rival and eventually found a wave in the final minutes of the 30-minute heat to exhibit yet another set of impressive tricks, adding an additional 7.53 points to his account. As a result, he moved
to a heat-total of 15.70 points, consequently sealing the fate of the contest in his favour.
The next heat featured an intense battle between Otton and his country-man, Davidson. The 31-year-old Otton scored 6.00 points off a wave early in the heat, but Davidson managed to take the lead by scoring 7.00 points of his first business-wave.
Almost halfway through the heat, Davidson added an additional 5.43 points to his account to take his two-wave total of 12.43 points. Otton got hold of a juicy wave and utilised it to collect 7.50 points, moving to a heat-total of 13.50 points and defeating
his rival by 1.07 points to clinch the Round 3 spot.
