Adam Melling surfs safely into the third round: 2011 Billabong Rio Pro
Adam Melling of Australia won the twelfth and final heat of the second round of 2011 Billabong Rio Pro, at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil today.
He grabbed the highest heat score of 15.00 (out of 20) and jumped into the third round. Meanwhile, Alejo Muniz of Brazil was not able to move forward into the next round on account of his average performance in the final heat of the day, capturing just 9.27
points.
“The cut is lingering all year, so it always feels good to get heat wins” Melling said. “We’ve got the two cuts in one year and it’s on everyone’s mind. It can throw you off or you can also use it to fire you up a bit.”
Adam Melling will be up against the French surfer, Jeremy Flores, in the third round at Rio de Janeiro tomorrow.
Flores beat the USA and Australian surfers, C.J Hobgood and Josh Kerr, in the first round of the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro yesterday.
He captured the highest heat score of 13.56, while Hobgood finished second with a total score of 10.80 and Kerr settled third with 7.43 points in the following heat.
In the meantime, Raoni Monteiro of Brazil clinched the ninth heat of the day with a sterling score of 12.53. On the other hand, Tiago Pires (PRT) couldn’t be able to move into the third round with a minor score of 9.40 in the respective heat. Monteiro will
compete with Mick Fanning in the third round at Arpoador tomorrow.
Fanning won the fourth heat against Simao Romao of Brazil and Dusty Payne of Hawaii with the highest heat score of 15.07 yesterday.
“It was tricky trying to find the right one out there, but I watched the heat before and noticed that guys that were doing turns back-to-back were getting scores, so I tried to concentrate on that,” Fanning said.
Last, but not the least, Heitor Alves of Brazil won the eleventh heat of the second round with a score of 12.44, while Dusty Payne of Hawaii came second with 10.40 points.
