Adam Mihdawy defeats Benjamin Mitchell to move into 2nd round – L, G & T Tennis Challengers 2011
Qualifier Adam El Mihdawy secured a superb 7-6 (5), 6-0 victory over Australian tennis pro Benjamin Mitchell on Tuesday to book his place in the second round of 2011 ATP Levene, Gouldin & Thompson Challengers tournament here in
Binghamton, China.
Although the American made a shaky start to the contest, he was able raise the level of his game with the progress of the match. Mihdawy looked in complete control of his game in the second set as he claimed six straight games
to seal the match that lasted for only one hour and 32 minutes on the hard courts Binghamton.
Looking for place in the second round, Adam El Mihdawy started off very aggressively. He created break chances with his strong game play and pressurised his opponent to force errors off him. Serving with control and precision,
the 22-year-old held on to most of his service games.
Mitchell was also up for the challenge as he broke back twice to force the opening set into a tie-breaker. Firing a blistering serve ace in the tie-breaker, Mihdawy set up two set points for himself and then converted the first
one to take 1-0 lead in the set score.
However, the second set proved to be a completely one sided. Not dropping a single game in the set, Mihdawy completed his victory in straight sets to move ahead at the ATP tournament.
Benjamin Mitchell, who is un-seeded the Association of Tennis Professional ranking, put up a brave fight to give a very tough time to the American. However he lacked the firepower in several crucial aspects of the game. It will
not be wrong to say that his inability to handle the pressure on big points played a huge role in deciding the outcome of the clash.
Several times, he failed to convert the 30-0 advantage into a break point chance and he paid the price for his unforced errors. He will be looking to work on certain areas of his game and come back strongly on his next appearance
on the tour.
Adam El Mihdawy was delighted his performance. He served accurately and claimed 69 per cent of the points on his first serve. Executing his game plan incredibly well, he was well prepared for the challenge. He will be eying another
strong performance in his next match-up to make it to the final stages of the tournament.
